Berea -- Sustainability Central

(Thomas)

A highlight from 2 weeks ago...

Berea, Kentucky - where modern technology is partnered with classic farming.

After witnessing how "advanced" and yet simple the Berea College Ecovillage was, it really pushed me to take some photos and share interesting, simple designs and ideas they use to hopefully, someday, bring to Graceland. Composting barrels, solar panels, gardens, and cobb walls were only some of the ideas captured and portrayed here from the ecovillage.

Solar panels adorn almost all buildings, supplying more than enough power for all energy needs.

Gardens spread out through the backyards of each house, supplying fresh vegetables and fruits for the Commons House.

High insulating walls; cobb. Which can also be filled with glass, dirt and wood to recycle material and increase insulation.

Funneling rainwater from the apartment rooftops into 55 gallon barrels to later use in the gardens.

Composting barrels are spread out around the
entire ecovillage - maximizing waste reduction.

The Commons House - this apartment requires its residents to work a certain amount of hours in the gardens as part of the "rent"

Why not replace all trees in every park with fruit trees? peaches, apples, pears, berries, etc. all free for consumption by the public.

In the "edibles garden" (in the heart of the city)

Picking Mulberries to make pie for dessert.

Wouldn't it be great if every food was this fresh?
